VIJAYAWADA: YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has revived the State’s capital debate by announcing that his party will make the proposed MAVIGUN corridor a major political issue in the 2029 Assembly elections.

MAVIGUN refers to Machilipatnam–Vijayawada–Guntur, a proposed coastal urban development corridor connecting the three cities. Jagan said the next Assembly election would effectively be a choice between MAVIGUN and Amaravati.

What is MAVIGUN?

The proposed MAVIGUN concept links:

  • MA – Machilipatnam
  • VI – Vijayawada
  • GUN – Guntur

The YSRCP has presented it as an alternative development model, arguing that the region already has infrastructure and economic activity that could be integrated rather than concentrating development around Amaravati.

Jagan’s announcement

On July 1, 2026, Jagan said YSRCP would continue to support MAVIGUN and make it an important part of its election campaign. He described the proposal as the party’s alternative to the Amaravati capital-development model.

Jagan also criticised the Amaravati project, alleging corruption and excessive expenditure. These are political allegations by the YSRCP and are not established facts.

Why it matters to Krishna District

The proposal has particular significance for Krishna district because Machilipatnam and Vijayawada are two of the three major locations forming the MAVIGUN name.

For Machilipatnam, the proposal could potentially bring greater emphasis on urban development, transport connectivity, industry and the city’s economic relationship with Vijayawada and Guntur.

Political response

Jagan’s announcement immediately renewed the political debate over Andhra Pradesh’s capital and development strategy. The ruling TDP-led government supports the development of Amaravati, while YSRCP has promoted MAVIGUN as its alternative vision.

The issue has therefore developed into a broader political contest over centralised versus corridor-based development in the State.

Latest political position

Jagan has said that YSRCP intends to take the MAVIGUN proposal to the people during the next Assembly election and include it in the party’s electoral agenda. The proposal is consequently emerging as one of the major political themes being developed by the YSRCP well ahead of the 2029 elections.
